What do we do?

At Walton Hall Academy, we are dedicated to nurturing every student grow into a confident, independent, and flourishing young person.  From the very start of Key Stage 3, our PfA Independence curriculum combines academic learning with practical life skills.  Through lessons such as PSHE and Computing, and programmes like Votes for Schools, students explore decision-making, personal responsibility, digital safety, and how to take part in their communities.

In addition to classroom learning, students also practise independence in real-life situations.  They learn to use public transport, handle money, plan visits, and take part in community events.  Whole-school opportunities, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, also give students the chance to strengthen teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving skills.  These experiences prepare them for life both inside and outside school.

How do we do it?

Our independence lessons give students the skills to try things for themselves, whilst providing support when needed.  Initially, students begin with guided tasks, before gradually taking more responsibility for planning, organising, and solving problems in real-world contexts.  For example, they might plan a journey on public transport, manage a budget for a school visit, or work together to organise an event for charity.

Along the way, reflection, peer feedback, and coaching help students understand their progress and identify areas for improvement.  These hands-on, supportive approaches support students in building confidence and resilience, giving them the tools to make informed choices and tackle challenges independently.  Students also work towards academic qualifications, including Entry Level 2 Certificates and BTEC Level 1 Awards, Certificates, or Diplomas in Vocational Studies with a sector-specific subject.

Why do we do it?

Ultimately, we want every student at Walton Hall Academy to leave school ready for their next steps.  Developing independence helps students grow in self-belief, resilience, and the ability to make certain choices for themselves.  It also prepares them to manage everyday situations, interact positively with others, and take part in their communities.  By nurturing these skills, we help students flourish personally and socially, so that they feel more capable and confident as they move forward in learning and life.
