What do we do?

Our curriculum is designed to promote personal and cultural development while preparing students for adulthood. Our school ethos—Nurture, Grow, Flourish—underpins everything we do, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to develop confidence, independence, and essential life skills.

Recognising the diverse needs of learners, our emphasis is on flexibility and creativity to support focus, engagement, and readiness for learning. All work within our Seekers curriculum is planned to meet the individual desired outcomes that are identified in students EHCPs.  Sensory regulation is integrated within the timetable throughout the school day and interventions tailored to the individual needs of the student to help them succeed. The overarching aim is to ensure all students experience a curriculum that fosters development and prepares them for life beyond school.

How do we do it?

Key Stage 3: A pre-formal curriculum emphasises preparation for adult life, with a focus on communication, numeracy, and literacy as core skills.

Key Stage 4: Students build on their ability to manage sensory needs with self-regulation strategies. The ASDAN ‘Towards Independence’ programme aligns with Preparation for Adult Life pathways, focusing on practical skills in areas like health, relationships, and employment.

Key Stage 5: With greater independence, students engage in community-based experiences and complete accredited ASDAN modules whilst working towards Functional Skills Entry Level 1. These opportunities support their transition to adulthood, fostering confidence in navigating everyday life.

The curriculum is enriched with sensory interventions and therapeutic programmes, including sensory rooms, outdoor education, music therapy, and mindfulness activities. These tools help students develop awareness and adaptability in various environments.

Why do we do it?

Our sensory-based curriculum ensures students are better equipped to understand and manage their own needs, build relationships, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. Through tailored assessments, including video and photographic evidence, individual progress against EHCP desired outcomes is tracked through Evidence for Learning and shared with families to highlight achievements and inform future goals. Students gain the skills and confidence to transition into further education, employment, or supported living. By focusing on sensory regulation, practical skill-building, and therapeutic activities, Walton Hall Academy enables students to lead fulfilling lives and prepare effectively for adulthood.
