What do we do?
At Walton Hall Academy, we help students in Post-16 understand their community and the part they play in it. They learn about the groups, places and opportunities around them and take part in meaningful community projects throughout the year. These projects range from improving the school environment to supporting local charities, working with community groups and taking part in volunteering activities. Students gain real experiences that help them feel connected to the world around them.
How do we do it?
We build community learning into regular lessons and practical projects. Students start by exploring what community means and identifying the groups they belong to. They research local organisations, invite visitors into school and create resources to share with others. Throughout the year, they plan and deliver hands‑on projects such as fundraising, gardening, awareness campaigns, partnerships with local groups and events for younger or older members of the community. Each project is carefully structured so students can practise communication, teamwork and organisational skills whilst working towards shared goals.
Why do we do it?
We do this work because feeling part of a community is an important part of growing into adulthood. By taking part in real projects, students build confidence, independence and a sense of self‑worth. They learn how to contribute, how to work with others and how to access community groups that can support them beyond school. This helps them become active, informed and capable members of their communities, ready to make a positive difference.
